Garden Profile

Wellington Community Garden

Mission Statement:

To provide an opportunity for members to work together to produce nourishing fresh food, grow friendships, build dignity and respect in the community, and create an environment that nurtures both body and spirit.

Wellington Community Garden was established in 1999. Founded by Wellington area residents and members of Chalmer's United Church, the garden is located on the 'Parks and Partners' site at 141 Street and 137 Avenue. The garden was initially funded by a $2400 grant from the Muttart Foundation to purchase lumber, soil, shed, seeds and tools.

Wellington Community Garden prides itself for its community spirit. We grow relationships as well as food! Gardeners garden in 'buddy' style to see what each other is growing or trying out for the season. A meeting takes place in April or May with the gardeners to discuss new ideas and concerns for the season.

The "Garden" was granted permission to access a water tap (approximately 300 feet from our site) by WESTCORP INC., owner of Wellington Park Townhomes. They asked no fee, only a membership to Wellington Community League. The Community League donated memberships for 2004 and 2005. Access is reviewed annually. Water is stored in four large garbage cans in our shed.

Wellington Community Gardeners are governed by a mission statement, garden objectives, and a members contract. Each participant agrees to these principles by signing an agreement at the start of each season.
