The Richfield Community Garden is a member-based, organic garden project which aims to provide individuals and families with a space to grow fresh produce and flowers.
Established in 1997 the garden is a series of thirty-one raised beds located on the pipeline right-of-way at approximately 86 street and 36A Avenue, adjacent to the Keegano Housing Co-operative Edmonton, Mill Woods,
In keeping with the intent of the original grant proposal The Richfield Community Garden continues to be a gathering point for the community—a place where neighbors meet, share stories and gardening tips.
Keegano Housing Co-operative supplies the Richfield Community Garden with water (at a very reasonable cost of $50.00 per season) as well the garden storage shed is located on co-op property. For this garden season the yearly cost to have a plot will stay at $12.00 in order to be affordable for all families. A new policy has been instituted this year in which all gardeners put down a $10.00 deposit which will be returned at the end of the season once their garden plot is cleaned up for the year.
We are very pleased to announce a new adventure in gardening that has been taking shape all spring. This year two of our garden members are going to conduct a pilot project and turn their garden plots into “Square Foot Gardens”. This concept is expected to give higher produce yields in a smaller space as well as use less seed, water, soil and fertilizer. We will be watching this take shape over the next few weeks as the plots are constructed and anticipate some very good produce yields this summer and fall.
