Garden Profile

Millwoods-Wagner Community Garden

The Millwoods-Wagner Community Garden was established in 1999 and has grown four times in membership. We start planning our season in late winter, meet for spring and fall clean-up, and once a month during the busy growing season. Our site is situated at W.P. Wagner School.

Water is obtained from the school and we make a donation to the school for water usage. Many members of our garden have a strong desire to establish a learning environment for new immigrants wanting to learn new skills in agricultural, horticultural and entrepreneurial activities.

In 2007 we established a partnership with with the SPIN programme, allowing senior citizen immigrants to garden with us. This has been mutually beneficial for all gardeners, allowing for an exchange of ideas and culture.

Challenges, Needs and Barriers:

The garden is experiencing significant increase in vandalism over the years. A request to the school board (the garden's landlord) in 2004 for permission to install a fence was denied. We have not been able to install a fence as of yet but are still exploring options to deal with this problem.
