Garden Profile

Highlands Community Garden

Our garden started in 2008 with a full garden! The garden is on the site of our old community hall which was demolished in the fall of 2007. To keep community spirit alive within our wonderful, mature neighborhood, we decided to plant a garden rather than grass. With the help from our community league and the Garden Network, we had it up and running and full within 6 weeks! How's that for community spirit?

We strive to give back to the community in one way or another. For the first season we planted vegetables for the Edmonton Food Bank. In 2009 we are donating a plot to our local elementary school to plant and tend vegies for the seniors center. It feels really good to do this and teaching the kids the importance of growing their own food is amazing. They love it and we secretly hope that by 'planting the seed' early in their lives teaches them the love of gardening for years to come.
