| Almost everybody these days has heard about food miles (or food kilometers). This refers to the distance that food has had to travel before it reaches our plates. Logically, we know that the farther our food has to travel the greater our effect on the environment due to carbon emissions.
Community Gardeners are helping to reduce human impact on the environmnet by growing their own vegetables, and they're making a big difference! Below you'll find too tables. The first indicates how many food kilometeres were saved by growing vegetables locally in a Community Garden. The second graph shows how many carbon emissions were saved from going into the environment by growing vegetables locally.
These statiscs were compiled using answers from 80 of 2500 gardeners. The number of kilometers and of saved greenhouse gas emissions were calculated using the LifeCycles calculator. You can view this calculator at www.lifecyclesproject.ca
