Description:

Park West Community Garden is sponsored by the Covenant Christian Reformed Church.  Our congregation sponsored the Single Parent Community Garden since 1993.  In 2002, we relocated our gardens adjacent to our new Church property at 19010 – 87 Avenue.  As part of the Deacon’s outreach community initiatives, the community garden has been a way for us to contribute to the community we live in, and encourage community building and community spirit.  The ditch area is cleaned and left to naturalize.  So far birds and frogs have returned to the area.

Park West Community Garden has an architecturally designed landscaped perennial garden, good soil, water, a tool shed, compost bin, and future plans include developing a quiet resting area complete with a gazebo.  The site provides 30 vegetable plots with plans to expand to 50 plots.

Park West Community Garden welcomes anyone who has a desire to grow vegetables and/or flowers and wanting the benefits of gardening with friends and neighbours.  Plot rental fees are nominal.  Gardening guidelines include being a good neighbor to your adjoining gardeners, good composting practices; stewardly use of the water and keeping our gardens organic.  We also have raspberries and rhubarb available for picking either by the public or the gardeners.

Challenges, Needs, and Barriers:

1.We compost at the garden, but provide additional compost each year.

2.We welcome seeds and bedding plants.

3.We would benefit from the help of a Master Composter and Master Gardeners living in our community.

4. Weed control is a big challenge as we are adjacent to fields and highways.

What is the Community Garden Network? Incorporated as a not-for-profit society in 2003, the Community Garden Network (CGN) of Edmonton and Area is comprised of volunteers. Representing existing and emerging community gardens throughout Edmonton and area, it is supported by agencies and organizations that share the vision of the CGN.
