Our Urban Eden was established in 1999 with a main objective to develop a sense of community in the downtown core. We have just recently moved our garden to a permanent site adjacent to our former location on 99 Avenue between Bellamy Hill Road and 103 Street. The garden is under major construction with plans for new raised gardens, flowerbeds, and a picnic area.

In 2006 we focused on the installation of our garden at the new site. 2007 has seen us installed in our new location and we're beginning to make it a home once again.

In past years we regularly hosted parties including potluck suppers for Canada Day Celebrations, complete with fireworks! Our many social activities will “enlarge your circle of friends with some vital, action-oriented people, and add some fun to your life”. Membership in our garden fosters friendships between many diverse groups (seniors, students, fixed income, disabled, etc.). Garden participants help each other out, and we hold regular meetings to plan activities for our members and to discuss our concerns. Each gardener is provided with guidelines at the start of each season outlining courtesies and responsibilities to gardening on our site.

The Garden is very visible and designed to invite local residents to stroll through our garden. It has become an integral part of the downtown community, a must see for visitors to Edmonton, and a model of successful community gardening.

What is the Community Garden Network? Incorporated as a not-for-profit society in 2003, the Community Garden Network (CGN) of Edmonton and Area is comprised of volunteers. Representing existing and emerging community gardens throughout Edmonton and area, it is supported by agencies and organizations that share the vision of the CGN.
