Description:
Our community garden at the Bay Vista condo arose out of the concern that our yard was being used to maintain the status quo of an outdated concept. A wide useless lawn that no one enjoyed. It was instead a high maintenance area that was fertilized chemically, watered, and then cut by a landscape company. There was no designated area for enjoyment of the outdoors within the confines of our property.
One resident noticed that in places like Switzerland and England, community gardens are tucked into all sorts of spaces. Including back alleys, between highways or rail lines. Even so these gardens have waiting lists extending years, people just hoping for the chance to get in. The idea was born.
With Edmonton busting out with condos and apartment style living the residents realized a need for a green space. The ability to be able to touch the earth, within our urban metropolis. With the abundant wasted space on the property we made the active decision to use it in a more environmentally manner, that was directly beneficial to the residents, and the community within Bay Vista. Oasis at the Bay was created from that vision.
Oasis at the Bay is more than just the garden plots at the rear of the property. Its a combined effort to transform the entire property. A major guiding principle is the environment. The use of chemicals on the property has been strictly discontinued. Organic methods of growing and fertilizing as well as intense methods of planting and growing have been adopted in the plots. To accompany these principles compost bins have incorporated into the garden area for all residents to contribute to. For the gardeners this has resulted in the sharing of information, and actively learning together.
Out front of the building zone specific hardy shrubs and trees have been planted on the property to decrease the open space in the front of the building. These provide sanctuary to local birds, contribute in a small way to pay back our carbon usage as a multi complex, and increase the "green" value of the front area. Its a pleasant and soothing mixture of shades of green and cream. Patio gardening is highly encouraged in the building and the over flowing planters full of bright colours enhance the overall effect of the front landscape.
The rear garden area development will continue. The raised beds allow for residents to plant everything from flowers to vegetables and herbs. Additional raised beds will be added as the level of interest increase. As well additional communal boxes will be installed planted with rhubarb, herbs, additional fruit trees, and perennial flowers. A natural extensions of the indivual plots.
As is often now there are fresh flowers in our foyer, fruits and vegetables laid on the table for the taking, and the smell of fresh baked goods in the air as neighbours once strangers exchange hello's.
That is community gardening at Oasis at the Bay.
