Project Description:

The Crystal Kids Community Garden project was initiated by Eastwood Community members and agencies. Agency members of the Eastwood and Area Food Security Network discussed ways to support the garden initiative and interest in recruiting gardeners was expressed by Crystal Kids executive.  Healthy Alberta Communities is also involved in the creation, promotion and perpetuation of the garden.

Crystal Kids is a neighbourhood agency that works with youth in the area; particularly for at risk children who often experience neglect and abuse at home.  The Community Garden provides an ideal opportunity to engage youth in a positive community building activity and teach them about gardening and food production.

This gardening project will proceed in two phases. The first year gardeners will be using a gardening space donated by a community member. The second phase for the Crystal Kids Community Garden project will involve finding a more permanent gardening site. This phase will focus on small scale activities that will build community capacity and engagement towards the overall goal of a permanent garden space within the community.

Phase one will engage interested gardeners in the planning process and raise community awareness about the project to attract more gardeners and community support.  Membership into this Community Garden is open to members of Crystal Kids and members of the community at large.

Project Progress:

The gardeners were successful in preparing the land, acquiring soil, and getting plants in the ground in a very short period of time upon receiving their garden grant.  Enthusiasm for the project has been evident from the beginning.  The members have been very dedicated is managing the garden and ensuring it is well kept and cared for.

What is the Community Garden Network? Incorporated as a not-for-profit society in 2003, the Community Garden Network (CGN) of Edmonton and Area is comprised of volunteers. Representing existing and emerging community gardens throughout Edmonton and area, it is supported by agencies and organizations that share the vision of the CGN.
