Project Description:

The Britannia-Youngstown Community Garden Project is a partnership between the tenants of the Capital Housing Tenant Centre located at Youngstown Complex (#110-16604-102A Avenue) and the City of Edmonton.  The project was developed based on priorities identified by residents in September 2006 to address a major increase in the ratio of crime activity in this location.  Additional project collaboration includes resources such a local community group Parent Link, the Community Garden Network and gardening resource people who are providing educational supports.

In empowering each of the residents, it is hoped there will be an enhanced level of capacity for the tenants as they start to build relationships with their neighbors.  Another goal is to create a sense of neighborhood where there is none.  Currently, residents are fearful of stepping out of their buildings because it is unsafe.  If neighbours begin forming relationships it will contribute to the security of the area.

Since the beginning of the project there has been a huge outpouring of support.  Initially 25 containers were purchased and it was unsure if enough community members would participate in the initiative but with the zeal of the neighbourhood they now have 31 containers.  Hopefully next year’s garden will see an even bigger expansion, potentially into the ground.

It should be noted that in the initial proposal, the Social Worker for the area accounted for extra purchases as a result of predicted vandalism.  In a high-needs area such as Britannia-Youngstown it was almost certain that vandalism would be a persistent problem and yet to date there has been none reported!  The community is working together to help beautify their living space and promote a healthy neighbourhood.

What is the Community Garden Network? Incorporated as a not-for-profit society in 2003, the Community Garden Network (CGN) of Edmonton and Area is comprised of volunteers. Representing existing and emerging community gardens throughout Edmonton and area, it is supported by agencies and organizations that share the vision of the CGN.
